Trash compactor repair in Stafford, VA
Won't run, won't compact or the drawer is stuck. Built-in and freestanding compactors.
Swift and Reliable
Straight answers
Trash compactors are simple machines. A motor turns a pair of threaded power screws that drive a ram down into the bin, and a set of switches tells it when to stop and reverse. When one quits, it’s usually a safety switch, a worn drive chain, stripped power nuts or a drawer that’s come off its track.
We repair built-in and freestanding compactors and test the switches and drive system before recommending anything. Parts for older models can take some tracking down, so we’ll tell you up front what’s available.
If a compactor isn’t worth fixing, we’ll say that too.

Common problems
What goes wrong with a trash compactor, and what we check
-
Compactor won't start
What we check
We test the drawer safety switch, the key or lock switch, the top limit switch and the motor. A drawer that isn't fully closed is a common cause.
-
Motor runs but ram won't move
What we check
That usually means a broken drive chain or belt, a slipped sprocket or stripped power nuts. We inspect the drive system and the power screws for wear.
-
Ram stuck in the down position
What we check
We check the directional and limit switches that reverse the ram, and the power nuts. A jammed ram can also keep the drawer from opening.
-
Drawer won't open or slides badly
What we check
We check the drawer rollers, tracks and slides, and clear trash caught behind the bin. A ram stuck in the down position will also hold the drawer shut.
-
Doesn't compact the trash
What we check
We look at the power nuts and screws, the drive chain tension and the motor's start switch. Overfilled or wrong-size bags can also affect results.
-
Bad odor even when empty
What we check
We clean the bin area and check the odor filter and fan if your model has them. Liquid that has leaked behind or under the bin is a common source.
Straight answers
Is it worth fixing?
Most compactors last about 6 to 10 years. Switches, drive chains, rollers and power nuts are worth replacing on most units, especially built-ins, since a new compactor has to fit the existing cabinet opening.
When the motor has failed, or parts for an older model are discontinued, the repair can cost more than half the price of a comparable new compactor. In that case, or when the unit is near the end of its typical life, replacing it usually makes more sense. Some people choose to remove it and use the space for a pull-out trash cabinet, and that’s a reasonable choice too.

FAQ
Trash compactor repair questions
Still have a question? Call (540) 922-7111
Why won't my compactor run when the drawer is closed?
Compactors have several safety switches, and all of them have to be closed for the motor to start. The drawer switch, the key switch and the top limit switch are the usual suspects.
Check that the key is turned on (if your model has one) and that the drawer is fully closed with nothing caught behind the bin. If it still won’t start, a switch has probably failed.
Can I put glass and cans in a trash compactor?
Many manufacturers allow glass bottles and jars laid on their side in the middle of the bin, but check your manual. Never put in aerosol cans, which can burst under pressure, or anything flammable or toxic.
Wet food waste and liquids cause most odor problems, so drain containers and wrap food scraps first.
Do I need special bags for a trash compactor?
Yes. Compactor bags are heavier than kitchen bags and sized for your model’s bin. Regular bags tear under the ram’s pressure and can let liquid leak into the drawer.
Using the bag size listed in your manual also helps the bag stay on its retainers, so it doesn’t slip or bunch during a cycle.
