Freezer repair in Stafford, VA

Upright and chest freezers that won't freeze, frost up or won't stop running.

Frost built up inside a freezer around a tub of ice cream

A freezer full of food that starts to thaw is stressful, but the cause is usually a single part. Common failures include condenser fans, defrost heaters, thermostats, start relays and door seals that no longer close tight.

We repair upright freezers, chest freezers and the freezer section of your refrigerator. Freezers kept in a garage get extra attention, because summer heat pushes them hard and many standard models aren’t built for wide temperature swings.

You’ll know what failed, what the repair costs and whether it makes sense before we start.

Common problems

What goes wrong with a freezer, and what we check

  • Freezer isn't freezing

    What we check

We check the condenser coils and fan, the start relay and overload, and the compressor's current draw. On frost-free uprights we also test the evaporator fan and defrost system.

  • Thick frost on the walls

    What we check

Heavy frost means warm, moist air is getting in or the defrost system has failed. We check the door gasket and alignment, the defrost heater, the defrost thermostat and the timer or board.

  • Freezer runs constantly

    What we check

We check the gaskets, condenser airflow and the thermostat or temperature sensor. If those test fine, we take temperature readings across the system to look for a refrigerant problem.

  • Water pooling under the freezer

    What we check

We check the defrost drain and drain pan on uprights, the drain plug on chest models, and the door gasket for gaps that cause condensation.

  • Clicks but won't start

    What we check

A click every few minutes with no steady hum often means a failed start relay or overload protector. We test both and check the compressor windings before replacing anything.

  • Freezer is noisy

    What we check

Rattles often come from the drain pan or a loose panel. Squealing or grinding usually means a failing fan motor, and a loud, labored hum can point to a compressor starting problem.

Straight answers

Is it worth fixing?

Most freezers last 10 to 20 years, and chest models often run longest because they have fewer moving parts. Fans, relays, thermostats, gaskets and defrost parts are usually worth replacing.

A failed compressor or a refrigerant leak is the expensive case. If that repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new freezer, or the unit is near the end of its typical life, replacing it usually makes more sense. A basic chest freezer costs less new than most refrigerators, so that line comes sooner.

FAQ

Freezer repair questions

Still have a question? Call (540) 922-7111

Can I keep a freezer in my garage?

Usually, but check the temperature range in the owner’s manual first. Standard freezers are designed for indoor conditions, and a hot garage makes the compressor run much longer while a very cold one can cause problems for some models.

Garage-ready models are built for wider swings. If your garage freezer is struggling, we can tell you whether it’s a failed part or simply the location.

How often should I defrost a chest freezer?

When the frost gets about 1/4 inch thick, or at least once a year. Thick frost insulates the walls, so the freezer runs longer and holds less.

Unplug it, move the food to coolers, open the drain plug and let the ice melt with the lid open. Don’t chip ice with a knife or scraper, because the cooling lines run inside the walls and are easy to puncture.

What temperature should my freezer be?

0°F or below, which is what the FDA recommends for frozen food. An inexpensive appliance thermometer in the middle of the freezer gives a more honest reading than the dial.

If it won’t hold 0°F with clean coils and a good door seal, a part is usually failing and it’s worth having it checked.
