Stainless French door refrigerator in a white kitchen

A fridge that stops cooling puts a clock on everything inside it. Usually the cause is a single part, such as a condenser fan, evaporator fan, defrost component, start relay or control board. We test those first, so you know what failed before we talk about fixing it.

We work on top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side and French door models, including ice makers and water dispensers. You get a straight answer on what’s wrong, what it costs and how long it takes.

If the problem is in the sealed system (the compressor and refrigerant lines), we’ll tell you plainly and help you decide whether it’s worth repairing.

Common problems

What goes wrong with a refrigerator, and what we check

  • Fridge isn't cooling

    What we check

We check the condenser coils and fan, the evaporator fan, the start relay and the compressor's current draw. Dirty coils and failed fans are the most common causes.

  • Fridge is freezing the food

    What we check

We test the thermistor, the air damper that meters cold air from the freezer, and the control board. A damper stuck open is a frequent cause.

  • Water leaking on the floor

    What we check

We check for a clogged defrost drain, a cracked drain pan and loose or split water lines to the ice maker and dispenser.

  • Ice maker stopped making ice

    What we check

We test the water inlet valve, the ice maker module and its thermostat, and check for a frozen fill tube or a clogged water filter.

  • Clicking, buzzing or fan noise

    What we check

Clicking every few minutes often points to a failing start relay or overload. Grinding or squealing usually means a worn evaporator or condenser fan motor.

  • Fridge runs all the time

    What we check

We check the door gaskets for leaks, the condenser coils for dust and the defrost system for frost buildup.

Straight answers

Is it worth fixing?

Most refrigerators last about 10 to 15 years. Fans, relays, thermistors, defrost parts and water valves are usually worth replacing at almost any age, because the rest of the fridge is still sound.

Sealed-system failures are different. A failed compressor, a refrigerant leak or a blocked line needs specialized work, and on an older or lower-cost fridge it can cost more than half the price of a comparable new one. When that’s the case, or the fridge is near the end of its typical life, replacing it usually makes more sense, and we’ll say so.

FAQ

Refrigerator repair questions

Still have a question? Call (540) 922-7111

Why is my freezer cold but the fridge warm?

In most fridges, cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fresh food side by the evaporator fan. If that fan has failed, or the evaporator coil is packed with frost from a defrost fault, the freezer stays cold while the fridge warms up.

Unplugging it for a day (with the food moved out) melts the frost and brings it back for a while, but the problem returns until the defrost part is replaced.

How long is food safe if my fridge stops working?

Keep the doors closed. Based on USDA guidance, a closed fridge holds a safe temperature for about 4 hours, and a full freezer for about 48 hours (about 24 if it’s half full).

After that, move perishables to a cooler with ice. Food that has been above 40°F for more than 2 hours should be thrown out.

Should I clean my condenser coils?

Yes. Dust and pet hair on the condenser coils make the compressor work harder and run longer. The coils usually sit behind the bottom front grille or on the back.

Unplug the fridge first, then use a coil brush or a vacuum attachment. Once a year is enough for most homes, more often if you have pets.
