Washer and dryer side by side in a laundry room

When clothes come out damp after a full cycle, the cause is usually a heating element, a thermal fuse, a gas igniter or a vent too clogged to move air. Often it’s a combination, because a blocked vent makes the dryer overheat and blow its fuse.

We repair gas and electric dryers, including stacked laundry centers and dryers tucked into tight closets. If your dryer’s heating element failed, that’s usually a one-visit fix.

We also check the airflow through the vent, so the new part doesn’t fail for the same reason a few months later.

Common problems

What goes wrong with a dryer, and what we check

  • Dryer runs but no heat

    What we check

On electric dryers we test the heating element, the thermal fuse and the cycling and high-limit thermostats. On gas dryers we check the igniter, the flame sensor and the gas valve coils.

  • Takes 2 cycles to dry a load

    What we check

We measure airflow at the outside vent and check the lint screen housing, the duct behind the dryer and the exterior hood. Restricted venting is the most common cause of long dry times.

  • Dryer won't start

    What we check

We check the door switch, the start switch, the thermal fuse and the drive motor. On electric dryers we also confirm the 240-volt outlet is supplying both legs of power.

  • Squealing or thumping noise

    What we check

Squealing usually comes from a worn idler pulley or drum rollers. A rhythmic thump often means flat-spotted rollers or a worn drum belt.

  • Drum won't turn

    What we check

We check for a broken drive belt, then test the idler pulley, the belt switch if there is one, and the motor. A broken belt is common and a simple fix.

  • Burning smell or very hot

    What we check

We check the vent and the cabinet for lint buildup, inspect the heating element for a short to the housing, and test the cycling thermostat. Stop using the dryer until it's checked.

Straight answers

Is it worth fixing?

Dryers are simple machines and often last 13 years or more. Elements, fuses, belts, rollers, igniters and switches are all routine repairs, so most dryers are worth fixing.

The exceptions are a failed motor or control board on an older dryer, or a major failure in a stacked unit where the washer and dryer are one appliance. If the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new dryer, or it’s near the end of its typical life, replacing it usually makes more sense.

FAQ

Dryer repair questions

Still have a question? Call (540) 922-7111

How often should I clean my dryer vent?

Clean the lint screen after every load, and have the full vent run cleaned at least once a year. Long runs and vents with several bends may need it more often.

Signs it’s due include longer dry times, the top of the dryer feeling hot, and the outside flap not opening when the dryer runs. Lint is very flammable, so a clogged vent is a fire risk, not just a slow dryer.

Why does my dryer keep blowing the thermal fuse?

The thermal fuse is a safety part that opens when the dryer overheats. If it keeps blowing, the fuse isn’t the problem. Something is making the dryer run too hot.

The cause is almost always restricted airflow from a clogged vent or a crushed duct behind the dryer. A failed cycling thermostat or a shorted heating element can also do it, and we test both.

Is a foil or plastic dryer duct okay?

Plastic and thin foil accordion ducts aren’t recommended. They crush easily, trap lint in their ridges and can burn.

Manufacturers and building codes call for metal duct, kept as short and straight as possible. If your dryer sits close to the wall, a low-profile periscope duct helps avoid kinks.
